However, there is probably a third reason why Speth and many others like him are so good: their bags. Cans aren’t just people carrying things for golfers. Often, they are their friends or advisors. They can even help golfers win.
Having a good relationship with a caddy is an underrated aspect of golf, but it’s something that Spith understands and appreciates. His enclosure, Michael Griller, is not just an employee but a friend.
Describe the relationship between Michael Griller and Jordan Spieth
Speth and Greller have one of the most unique relationships in golf. Often the golfer and his golfer aren’t very close together, but that’s the case with these two. They are often described as being unusually close.
Greller was a math teacher and was 15 years older than Speth when the two first met in 2011. He was working part-time as a caddy when the golfer visited a tournament.
Turning professional, Greller expected to spend a year with him carrying cans and then back to teaching, but Spieth’s rise was meteoric and Greller stuck with it.
At many different times Greller has helped the golfer play a lot better. According to Golf Monthly, this has never been more true than it was in 2017 at the World Open:
“Michael did a great thing. In the seventh box, he said, ‘Do you remember that group I was with in Cabo?'” [with Michael Jordan and Michael Phelps] last week? You belong to it. You are that sporting caliber and I want you to believe that now because you are in a great position in this tournament. This is a new tournament. We start here.”
Spieth continued, noting how she helped him:
“I changed myself a bit. I thought about it while I was on top of some of those major three-by-four footers that I made in seven and eight and then 10 feet in 11 and 12 — and then all of a sudden the cover came off. I thought it was well said. It was just in time. Absolutely and I will never forget what he said to me, when he told me, and its significance.”
This kind of exchange happened many times throughout the duo’s career together. They are known to talk all the time on the course, because they can’t get enough of each other.
It truly was a match made in heaven, and arguably helped him become one of the most popular golfers playing today.
He’s currently the 13th golfer in the world right now, and he can probably attribute a lot of that to his relationship with Greller.
