Satchel’s Last Resort is home to more than 100 animals that have nowhere else to go because of their age, medical problem, breed, or behavior. Located on 12 acres east of I-75 off Clark Road, Satchel is a no-kill animal shelter and sanctuary whose mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and resettle. Unfortunately, other shelters refused to commit to long-term care of these animals or the owners had no other alternative but euthanasia. Satchel takes these dogs and cats often in need of extensive medical care and gets the help they need. Additionally, the organization has a Woof Pack program where experienced volunteers capture and mentor dogs and cats with behavioral challenges to help them solve their problems. In 2003, founder Page Knoebel founded the nonprofit organization where animals unable to recover from physical and/or emotional trauma can remain in the sanctuary for the rest of their normal lives. In addition, if a person cannot take care of the animal he has adopted, he will be welcomed back into the shelter. With an adoption rate of 90%, the Satchel team places every priority on finding a forever home for all the animals in their care.
On Saturday, November 5th, Satchel’s will be holding its biggest fundraiser of the year, the Pars 4 Paws golf tournament with 128 golfers. After the tournament, there will be cooking outside the oak trees, followed by a 50/50 helicopter drop – a fun event where golf balls sell for $20 each dropped from helicopters on the LBK Club course. The ball closest to the hole wins half the returns. Last year, Satchel sold over $10,000 worth of balls, and the winner earned $5,000. Football participants do not have to be present to win and the organizers do not shame a person to give back his winnings. Proceeds from the event will be used for Medicare, which exceeds $100,000 annually and also to someday build new homes for dogs currently in an outdoor shelter.
“This fundraising supports the livelihoods of the dogs and cats in our care. Everyone is in abilities but every animal deserves a home. With your support, we can make sure they find their support.” Prior to the pandemic, Beach Veterinary Clinic in Bradenton provided nearly all of our veterinary care services. Now, it’s a little more difficult for us. They are very busy so we use any emergency veterinary care that can help us. We have relationships with all of them and they are very good to us.”
The Pars 4 Paws golf tournament will take place at the Longboat Key Club. The event starts with breakfast from 7-8:30 a.m. and costs $195 per golfer or $90 for lunch only.
