It should come with a thank you card.
The Warriors season is not a minute old and Paul has already saved him. did not save him. rescued He. She. Not by its production, although Golden State can certainly count on that. Paul was one of the rising stars of last season, averaging 18.5 points, and has completed the rise from a late first-round pick to the G Leaguer to emerging NBA star. with Klay Thompson In good health, Paul has already emerged as a favorite to win the NBA’s Sixth Man award. He has SI Sportsbook at +450.
Paul saved the season by reacting to his altercation with Draymond Green. Or rather, his lack of reaction. From the video of Green’s haymaker debuting on Poole two weeks ago, to the Warriors’ still-baffling decision not to comment on Green, Pool has remained silent. He didn’t talk about it. He did not tweet about it. When he finally spoke on Sunday, he did so by saying he didn’t have much to say about her.
“[Green] apologize and [was] Paul said. “We plan to treat ourselves that way. We’re here to play basketball, everyone on our team and in the locker room knows what it takes to win the championship, and we’re going to do it on the court. That’s really all I have to say on the matter. We are here to win the championship and continue to comment Banners”.
Think about what Paul’s last two weeks must have been. He is 23 years old and emerging from a title-winning season, a championship he helped achieve. He’s settling into a role on a list that has a high chance of winning another. He is negotiating an extension of the contract that will secure him the wealth of generations.
Next, Green, the Warriors captain, did his watch during training. A day later, a video of the punch was leaked and instantly went viral.
When asked on Sunday what the past two weeks have been like, Paul was succinct.
“Long,” he said.
Paul could have reacted differently. He could have asked for Green to be suspended. It could have been justified. Fit, even. Contrary to what some have said, punches like the one that Greene sent to his teammate are not uncommon. ask Kevin DurantGreene’s former classmate. “I’ve heard people say it happens a lot in the NBA,” Durant said last week. “I’ve never seen anything like this before.” or Evan Fournierthe Knicks goalkeeper who tweeted, “There’s no way you can go back to your teammates after a punch like that.”
Paul could have made the team choose between them. A year ago, this could have been a move that would end your career. Green was one of the best defenders in the NBA and an integral member of the Warriors dynasty. Green is still (mostly) those things but with Golden State running with a focus on the long-term future, Poole, today, is arguably more important.
But Paul didn’t make warriors do that. Last week, Steve Kerr told reporters that the team would not have brought Greene back without Paul’s approval. “Obviously Jordan has to be involved in this,” Kerr said. This is a huge stress for Paul, of course. Kiss it and enjoy the season with one of the mates who beat it up. Repel, the man who knocked out the defensive anchor and the emotional leader of the Golden State.
Paul took the highway.
It will not be business as usual. But the warriors Can We get back to work. On paper, this Golden State team looks better. Thompson is in good health. James Wiseman, too. Jonathan Kominga and Moses Modi have an entire season under their belts. Andrew Wiggins, who announced his contract extension alongside Paul, is locked in for the long haul.
“It would be crazy to want to leave a team that won a championship,” Paul said. “We made our guys come back and we’re excited; we want to do it all over again.”
Said Green last week: “As far as we go, Jordan is a professional, I’m a professional. We have work to do. We’ve both seen a lot of victories over our lives and we know what it takes. So we’re going to do exactly that, what it takes to win.”
Green will be the motive. He knows he lost the locker room when he brought down Poole, and the incident was exacerbated when the video came out. He wants to add a fifth title to his resume. He wants to get paid. Green, who has a player option on his contract for next season, is unlikely to secure a lucrative extension before the Poole incident. He’s going to have to work even harder for it now. “I’m going to prove a lot of people wrong this year,” Green said. “I will do exactly what I do when I am motivated. In a major way.”
He’ll get a chance in the Golden State.
And he can thank Jordan Paul for that.
