Kevin Durant hasn’t shown up (yet? Maybe?), Deandre Ayton was instantly re-signed, Devin Booker got a fat extension and Jae Crowder didn’t find himself leaving the team (however, this time for sure).
However, the Suns made a few simple moves that quietly paid off with their 5-1 start.
Phoenix picked up Josh Okogie and Damion Lee via free agency while also adding Jock Landale via trade.
None of these players made headlines exactly when they arrived, but Bleacher’s report says they did well during the early stages of the season, giving the Suns a B- score for how their new additions have played so far.
“Phoenix brought the squad back this summer rather than seriously pursuing a Kevin Durant deal, and the start of the season 5-1 seemed to suggest that was the right move,” said Greg Schwartz.
“Landale was great as a big spinner, giving Suns 10.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 0.8 blocks in 17.5 minutes from the bench. He’s an energetic body that keeps watch and clears the glass and gives Chris Paul and Devin Booker a good goal.
Lee began his football career in the Suns with a game-winning jump against the Dallas Mavericks on opening night and was solid as a reserve shooting guard, making 38.9 percent of his threes.
“Okogie has appeared in every game so far but has only played over four minutes once. It’s a lockout option that will be called up in defensive situations or if there’s an injury ahead of him on the depth chart.”
Landale has risen admirably in the absence of Deandre Ayton thus far, while offering Lee a great secondary option for Cameron Payne as teammates on the bench.
Okogie showed off his defensive prowess on a few occasions as well.
There is still plenty early in the season, but the Suns are off to a great start, in part thanks to their new faces gained over the summer.
