Mayo Clinic and OptumLabs geriatricians will lead the new research initiative at MedStar Health at the Institute for Health, Economics, and Research on Aging (HEAR), to explore ways to improve care for older and complex patients.

Dr. Bangerter, a geriatrician and health services researcher, comes to MedStar Health to lead research efforts to explore how health systems can better manage the needs of elderly patients and patients with multiple chronic conditions. “I have always been drawn to the older population, even since childhood when I wanted to listen to my grandparents and neighbors tell stories. But when my uncle was diagnosed with dementia I decided to focus my career in science on addressing the needs of older adults with cognitive and functional disabilities,” Dr. Bangerter said. “We can improve the health care of elderly adults and other patients with complex health needs through applied research and improvements at the point of care delivery. In her new role as Scientific Director, Dr. Bangerter will be responsible for the overall strategy development and growth for the MedStar HEAR Institute, a health system applied research laboratory focused on innovation and the development of best practices for the delivery of aged care. Founded through efforts and leadership Dana FrankMD, chief of medicine at MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital and MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, researchers at HEAR apply a rigorous research methodology to identify better ways to care for patients whose health needs have increased either due to aging or multiple chronic conditions. Their research focuses on three main areas:

1) Evaluation of outcomes-based and patient-centered aged care models
2) Analysis of the economic impact of health care for elderly patients, patients with multiple chronic diseases and their families and the health care system
3) Provide equitable care for elderly patients or patients with complex health needs in community settings

“My clinical goal has always been to provide the best care and to ensure that my patients who are on the move more often have a positive experience where they feel supported. Prior to joining MedStar Health, Dr. Bangerter led research programs for leading healthcare organizations. Most recently at OptumLabs, she worked as Principal Research Scientist, Healthy Aging where she directed a team of researchers, analysts, and data scientists studying trends among patients eligible for Medicare. Prior to this role, Dr. Bangerter had an appointment with the Mayo Clinic Health Services Research faculty, where she worked alongside physicians to identify and solve problems related to the care of older adults and represented the health system at national and international scientific meetings.

She has a strong track record of securing federal and institutional grants to support her research, has published more than 50 academic papers, and serves as journal reviewer for leading academic journals in gerontology. In recent years, she has been honored as a Champion in the Society for Behavioral Medicine (2020) and served as a Fellow in Health and Aging Policy (2018-2019) where she supported the implementation of federal legislation to support family caregivers through placement in the Department of Health and Human Services.
