Having a Google My Business (GMB) profile is one of the best ways to draw attention to your local business and boost your ranking.

With so many features, working with GMB can become confusing.

One feature worth using: Google My Business posts.

Posts give you the ability to promote your brand, services, products, events and offers.

GMB Posts are displayed at the bottom of your Google My Business dashboard and are a great way to showcase what your business has to offer.

Creating posts is fairly easy, but before you publish posts it is important that you are familiar with the Google My Business Posts Content Policy.

You want to make sure you know what’s cool and what’s not great when it comes to posts.

If you violate the GMB posting policies, your message will be disapproved and you will not be able to post it as is.

How to create a GMB post

To create a post, simply log into your GMB dashboard and on the left side you will see a link to the posts:

From there a message will pop up and you can swipe to select the type of post you want to create:

Types of Posts You Can Create

Google gives you a variety of posts that you can create. Here is an overview.

GMB . Publication Types

COVID-19 Update

COVID-19 Update Posts let customers know about changes to your business due to COVID-19. (Hopefully this will Not That the Post option is permanent, but for now, it is what it is…)

Offer flyers are great if you have a special offer in your business that has a time limit.

In these types of posts, you can put a start and end date, add a title, description, and even a disclaimer (for example, “Select one date per customer”). These publications will remain live during the promotion period.

Add an update

Update posts are great for any news about your company or other information about your business, products, or services that you think your customers will find useful.

Did you do:

  • Hiring a new employee?
  • Opening a new site?
  • Add a new product?

Updating posts is the place to display this type of information.

Add event

Events are perfect for your business if you have a special event in your business – like ribbon cutting, special VIP shopping hours, open houses for realtors, and more.

With these posts, you can add a title and date range – you can even include times of the day if you want.

These posts will remain “live” for the entire date range.

These flyers are perfect for showing off the products you have for sale in your physical store.

You can include the product name, category, product description, price, and a call to action.

(NBRemember that only companies that operate online can do this Not Qualification for GMB listings. This other product is Just intended to complement and support brick-and-mortar retail stores.)

When creating a post, be sure to add a call to action (CTA). CTAs will vary depending on the type of post you’re creating, but here are some CTA options:

If you are using a URL as part of a call to action, it’s a good idea to use UTM tracking.

This way you can track your results in Google Analytics and the clicks will appear as direct traffic.

Add photos or videos

When you create a post, add a photo or a 30-second video – this will help grab the searcher’s attention.

There is debate in the industry about the best image size, but many advise that it should be 1200 x 900 pixels.

Keep in mind that Google Post images are cropped above centering – and the cropping is not always consistent.

So if you have text overlayed on your image, test to make sure the text isn’t truncated after publishing the post.

It’s also a good idea to look at your post on a desktop computer and on a mobile device – because it will look different.

You can upload up to 10 30-second videos and/or photos to your GMB post:

Posts stay live for seven days or “go dark” after the event date. (However, old posts still appear in your GMB list – they’ve been pushed down by new posts.)

COVID posts are the exception and are live for 14 days.

To help you remember to create new posts, Google will send you an email reminder before your GMB post expires:

Posts look different on desktop and mobile devices

When creating your posts, remember that things look different on a desktop versus a mobile device.

First, your message can contain up to 1500 characters.

Keep in mind that depending on the device the post is viewed on, the post text will be cut off – so be sure to put the most important information as close as possible to the front of the post.

Rejected Posts

If you violate the GMB Post policy, your message may be rejected.

If your entry has been declined, you will see a red “Disapproved” notification.

Usually, posts are rejected because of the content, photo or video used.

Posts can also be disapproved if they are in the “sensitive” topics area by following the Google Ads guidelines.

To avoid disapproval, don’t include website URLs, email addresses, or phone numbers in GMB posts – they may cause your message to be rejected. Using ALL CAPS or stock images can also cause the post to be rejected.

adviceHashtags serve no purpose in Google My Business posts.

GMB posts aren’t social media posts, so you’re wasting valuable – and silly – characters when you add #hashtags to your GMB posts

You also want to be careful about the words you use in your post.

Certain words can cause your participation to be rejected – some of these may sound benign to you, but may be viewed by Google as offensive.

In the example below, the name of the band playing in the bar is “Feral Booty,” but Google declined to participate because it considered the word “booty” offensive:

And one of the many other words Google doesn’t like is “gadget” — the foul-smelling stench of local hardware stores.

In this case, I think this post was disapproved because the word “tool” was included in the post.

If your post is disapproved, play with the words you have in the post and/or photo.

For example, in this lawyer’s post, the words “the truth is” were included and the post was rejected.

As a test, these words have been removed and the post has been approved.

Posts Improve engagement

Although there is no evidence that they can improve rankings, posts are a great way to get researchers’ attention and create engagement.

You can see how relevant your posts are to researchers by looking at the ideas.

Just look at the previous posts and you can see how many views the post received and how many people clicked on the CTA.

When you open the Posts section, you can also see how many new views your posts have received for the current week.

Another benefit is that Google’s machine learning has started using Post to . content attempt The answer to the GMB FAQ.

So if someone asks a question on your GMB info card, Google will search your posts (and reviews) to see if any of the post’s contents might answer the researcher’s question.

This is just one more reason to create good posts for your GMB profile.
