The Toledo Department of Health began visiting flu vaccination clinics on Monday

Annual clinics at the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department are open to the public at several locations during flu season.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Flu cases have decreased in the past two seasons, but Toledo-Lucas County Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Eric Zgodzinski said his team is still battling the flu.

TLCHD is starting again its annual flu vaccine clinics, which are open to the public next week, to prepare for flu season, which usually runs from October to May.

“We always have these symptoms, from October until early next year we see flu season, so we want to make sure that people have the ability to protect,” Zgodzinski said.

The CDC recommends that everyone over six months of age who is eligible for vaccination gets a flu shot every year. Zgodzinski said it’s important to get them now as people become more vulnerable.

“There is some backlash in this vaccine, but we don’t know exactly when the flu will stop and/or go away,” he said.

Zgodzinski said flu symptoms include pain, high fever and headache. These are also signs and symptoms of other illnesses, he said, so it’s important to stay on top of your personal health.

“Protect yourself by staying healthy, making sure you’re exercising, making sure you’re eating right, and getting plenty of sleep,” Zgodzinski said. “Destruction is important even during this time.”

He said the CDC has stated that flu shots can be received at the same time as a COVID-19 vaccine or booster.

It is open to everyone, regardless of insurance, but may be billed, including Medicare Part B and Ohio Medicaid. TLCHD makes a high-dose influenza vaccine available to those 65 and older.
