Annual hotel credit transfers for dining

The first card change announced in July is that a Marriott Bonvoy statement balance will be redeemed for up to $300 with a dining credit that can be redeemed at any eligible restaurant worldwide. Although it still adds up to the same total, you’ll now be compensated with only up to $25 per month over 12 months, instead of being able to get the entire balance back at once. Overall, this should give cardholders more flexibility because they are not locked into Marriott purchases to earn a statement balance. However, you will have to make sure that you put at least $25 a month to buy food on the card to ensure that you get the most value.

The free night prize becomes even more valuable

The Marriott Bonvoy Prestige Card previously offered an annual Free Night Award of up to 50,000 Marriott Bonvoy Points. Now, the prize can be used on rooms that cost up to 85,000 points, allowing you to book upscale hotels.

Elite status improvements

Cardholders now get Platinum Elite status instead of Gold Elite status, and unlock benefits like free breakfast at select brands and upgrades to suites. Additionally, those seeking a higher level of status now receive 25 Elite Night Credits each year instead of 15.

Opportunity to earn selection benefits

Along with the listed improvements, the card offers the chance to win an “Annual Card Choice Award” by spending $60,000 on the card in a calendar year (starting in January 2023). You’ll have a choice of five in-suite night prizes, a free additional night prize (up to 85,000 points) or $750 per bed from Marriott Bonvoy Boutiques.

New welcome offer

To celebrate the update, from now until January 11, 2023, the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express Card will offer new Cardmembers a welcome bonus of 150,000 Marriott Bonvoy Points after spending $5,000 in eligible purchases on the card in the first three months.

Higher annual fees

As you might expect, the new benefits come at a cost. The annual fee on this card is now $650 (see rates and fees), up from $450. If you opened your card before September 22, 2022, the new annual fee will take effect on the first renewal date on or after January 1, 2023.

However, the annual fee can be offset if you take full advantage of all the benefits, with new or enhanced perks added in bold:

  • FREE Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite Status
  • One free night award each year after a card renewal month that can be used for one night (redemption level at or below 85,000 Marriott Bonvoy Points) at participating Marriott Bonvoy properties. Some hotels have a resort fee.
  • Up to $300 in statement balances per calendar year (up to $25 per month) for dining purchases at restaurants worldwide
  • 25 Elite Night Credits each calendar year to use towards achieving the next level of Elite status
  • Up to $100 credit when staying two or more nights at a Ritz-Carlton® or St. Regis®
  • Annual Earned Choice Award: Each calendar year (starting in January 2023), after purchases of $60,000 USD, Cardmembers can select the Earned Choice Award benefit
  • Airport lounge access with Priority Pass Select membership (registration required)
  • Up to $100 for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee
  • Various travel protection
  • * Purchase and Return Protection

Same earning rates

There are no changes to the card winning rates:

  • 6x Points at participating Marriott Bonvoy properties
  • 3 times the points at restaurants around the world and on flights booked directly with airlines
  • Double points on all other eligible purchases
