Honor for excellence in drug quality

Oakland, California – For the 12th consecutive year, Kaiser Permanente has received the Laura Cranston Award for Excellence in Quality from the Pharmacy Quality Alliance for its high achievement in drug safety and appropriate use.

Kaiser Permanente Medicare Advantage plans serving members in California, Oregon, Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. were honored by the PQA at its annual meeting in May 2022. The awards are named in honor of the organization’s founding CEO.

“Medication safety, adherence, and efficacy are essential to providing high-quality care,” said Mary Beth Lang, senior vice president and director of pharmacy for Kaiser Permanente. “We are pleased that our integrated model of care delivery has once again resulted in PQA-recognised quality scores. This honor demonstrates the value we provide to Medicare members in the critical area of drug management.”

Each year, the PQA recognizes health plans for excellence in the quality of drug use, based on published evaluations of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Part D. The award is given to Medicare Advantage drug plans with at least a 4.5-star Part D summary rating and a 5-star rating on all five PQA drug scales used in the CMS Star Ratings Program.

PQA has issued annual Quality Awards since 2011, recognizing the nation’s highest achieving prescription drug plans for performance in PQA’s quality standards for drug safety and appropriate use. According to the PQA, only 2.9% of 850 Medicare Part D plans are eligible for an award in 2022 from the organization, which also honors plans that show significant improvement in PQA’s procedures for drug safety and appropriate use.
