CHICAGO AND GENEVA, September 23, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Givaudan, the global leader in fragrance and beauty, LanzaTech NZ, Inc. (“LanzaTech”), an innovative carbon capture and conversion method (“CCT”) has announced a collaboration to develop sustainable aromatic ingredients from renewable carbon.
Renewable carbon is carbon that avoids or replaces the use of additional fossil carbon. Examples include carbon from carbon dioxide and carbon recycling. Several commercial facilities are already licensing LanzaTech’s technology, converting various carbon sources to ethanol, including industrial emissions conversion in China, thanks to the power of industrial biology and the biocatalyst. With over 15 years of experience scaling, LanzaTech’s approach to carbon transformation brings renewable carbon into people’s lives by converting emissions to ethanol and the subsequent conversion of ethanol into the building blocks needed to make a wide range of consumer goods, such as laundry detergents, clothing, footwear and packaging materials. food. Additionally, with synthetic biology and modeling capabilities, LanzaTech could offer new pathways in biocatalysts for the production of a variety of different chemicals through this process.
The research collaboration with Givaudan is expected to harness the power of synthetic biology and go beyond ethanol production, as the companies work together to create new pathways for key fragrance ingredients used in the Givaudan portfolio. By seeking new opportunities to bring fragrance materials innovations to life, companies have a common goal of using sustainable methods to continue serving consumers by improving the fragrance palette and being good for the planet as well.
“We are very excited about this strategic collaboration with LanzaTech, a highly respected sustainable materials company with an impressive heritage and the latest research platform in renewable carbon solutions,” said Jeremy Compton, Global Head of Fragrance Science and Technology at Givaudan. And Happy With Love of Nature “is fully consistent with our two companies’ aspirations to develop products that support us in being carbon neutral in the future. Together, we have the ability to grow with our business while increasing our positive impact on the world through products that consumers feel good about and that preserve our planet.”
“Givaudan has always been an expert in combining innovation and technology in the world of fragrance, and we are excited to be working with a company that shares our vision of a post-pollution future,” said Jennifer Holmgren, CEO of LanzaTech. “Together, with the power of synthetic biology, we are expanding the way we can provide sustainable solutions to all consumers, giving them a choice about their carbon source while protecting our planet.”
Both companies have long been members of the Renewable Carbon Initiative, an organization that aims to support and accelerate the transition from fossil carbon to renewable carbon for all chemicals and organic materials.
“The industry has to go beyond using renewable energy,” said Michael Carus, founder of RCI. “All uses of fossil carbon must be ended, as carbon in chemical and plastic particles will end up in the atmosphere sooner or later. Only the complete phase-out of fossil carbon will help prevent a further increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations.”

LanzaTech harnesses the power of biology and big data to create climate-safe materials and fuels. With expertise in synthetic biology, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence and machine learning along with engineering, LanzaTech has created a platform that turns carbon waste into new everyday products that could otherwise come from virgin fossil resources. LanzaTech’s first two commercial gas fermentation plants produced more than 30 million gallons of ethanol, which is equivalent to offsetting the release of more than 150,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Additional stations are under construction globally. LanzaTech is headquartered in Illinois, USA.
As previously announced, LanzaTech has entered into a merger agreement for a business combination deal with AMCI Acquisition Corp. II (Nasdaq: AMCI). At the close, the combined company is expected to trade on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol “LNZA”.
