European-style apprenticeships give these Indian students an edge

Job training for youth in Indianapolis takes a very European look.

Two growing apprenticeship programs, one inspired by Germany and the other larger inspired by Switzerland, have started in the city and its suburbs over the past four years. Both high school and community college students pay to work and train for jobs in medicine, business, information technology, and manufacturing, all while in school. The programs cover all or part of the full tuition fee.

The programs differ slightly in their approach and benefits for students, but both are based on a common European mindset: students should not be left discovering – and paying for – an apprenticeship all on their own. Companies have to take some responsibility for training and supporting young people, as a social responsibility and for developing a talent pool from which to hire.
